Anti-war protesters gather in Parliament Square to express their disgust at the visit of US president George W Bush to the United Kingdom in order to 'alleviate' the legacy of his presidency. They gather in the Square, listen to speeches and then move toward Whitehall where they plan to go to Downing Street to make their voices heard. Metropolitan police officers gather in large numbers to stop them. The peaceful protest is then surrounded by over 1000 officers, a number of whom wear 'pro-war' insignia on their riot armour, and begin to suppress the protest. They carry out a number of arrests throughout the early evening by 'snatching' members of the public at random. The operation is organised and planned by Labour's Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Sir Ian Blair, who has now 'qualified' a long history of taking a violent approach to those who peacefully oppose the war.
