England continues to use the first past the post system (FPTP) and is one of just a few nations to continue to do so. FPTP is predominantly used by nations using the British Parliamentary system but has progressively fallen into disuse as other nations have adopted PR, including Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Under PR, both the Conservative and Labour parties would lose seats in equal measure if the 2010 General Election were staged again, the Liberal Democrat party would gain very substantially and the smaller parties would all mostly gain marginally.
