Camp Ashraf Hunger Strike Day 59. London, UK. 24/09/2009.
On day 59 of the solidarity Hunger Strike taking place outside the US embassy in London by relatives of the residents of Camp Ashraf, Iraq: members of the Christian faith gather in London to issue statements of support. Earlier in the week, British Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowen Williams, draws international attention to the issue of the 36 detained hostages now floundering in Iraqi custody. The men have been arbitrarily held in Iraq for almost two months, have not been charged with any offence, are held by Iraqi police officers with almost no reference to any court procedure in an environment in which the Iraqi judiciary appear to be completely absent. As a result, the detainees are now qualified as hostages. US President Barack Obama has not made any attempt to deal with the matter despite the US occupation authorities having a statutory obligation to the residents of Camp Ashraf under article 4 of the Geneva Convention, giving a persuasive insight into the nature of the democracy developing in Iraq.
